The team of Magnetic Future is developing a new generation of contactless, high-efficiency power supplies for superconducting (SC) magnets, unlocking their potential across critical industrial sectors including fusion energy, medical imaging, and space propulsion. Today, SC magnets are hindered by traditional power supplies based on metallic current leads, which cause massive thermal losses and require energy-intensive cryocoolers. This limitation severely affects their operational efficiency, with energy waste reaching over €10,000 per Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system per year and hundreds of kilowatts in future fusion plants. In the aerospace sector, this challenge currently blocks the adoption of superconducting technologies for high-performance electric propulsion systems such as Applied-Field Magnetoplasmadynamic (AF-MPD) thrusters. Magnetic Future addresses this problem through the development of patented Flux Pumps, superconducting power supplies that transfer energy without any direct electrical contact.
